What Makes an Elliptical Staircase Different From a Standard Curved Design?

Both look similar in a photograph. Sweeping, open in the middle, no post through the centre, the kind of thing that anchors a hallway and makes people slow down on the way past. Yet in the workshop they behave like different animals entirely, and the reason comes down to one word: radius.

A standard curved flight is drawn from a single radius point. Fix a centre, set a distance, sweep. Every part of that arc turns at exactly the same rate, so the geometry repeats itself endlessly as the flight rises. Predictable in the best sense.
The ellipse refuses to do that. Its curvature tightens at the ends of the long axis and relaxes along the flanks, meaning the radius is in constant motion. Elliptical staircases follow an elongated curve rather than a circular one, and nothing about them repeats. That single distinction ripples through the whole commission: how it feels underfoot, how the handrail gets made, what it costs, and which rooms it suits.
How the Two Geometries Differ in Practice
Start with the experience, because it's the part nobody mentions and clients notice immediately.
Climbing a constant-radius flight is metronomic. Rate of turn never changes, so your body settles into a rhythm within three or four steps. On an ellipse the turn accelerates through the tight ends and slackens along the straighter sides. Subtle, but present. Most people describe it as feeling more relaxed without being able to say why, which I've always found a slightly maddening piece of feedback to work with.
Now the practical consequences.
Setting out: On a circular sweep, every tapered tread is the same wedge, cut from one template. An elliptical stair does not have that luxury: each step differs from its neighbour, so setting out happens digitally and gets proved with full-size templates before anything is cut.
Handrails: This is where the money goes. A rail following a fixed arc climbs at a constant helix, so it can be laminated over a single former and reused across the length. Continuous rails on an ellipse change both curvature and rake as they travel, meaning individual sections. Balustrade: Baluster angles stay uniform on a circular design and vary continuously on the other. Glass channels behave similarly, since a curved panel on a changing radius cannot be repeated from panel to panel.
Footprint: Circular sweeps want a roughly square opening. Elongated plans want a long, narrow one, which is why they crop up so often in Georgian and Victorian townhouses where the hallway runs deep. Both are designed around a void with no central support, unlike spiral stairs.

Worth saying plainly: neither is superior. Clients occasionally arrive convinced the elongated version is inherently more prestigious, and I'd gently push back. A well-proportioned circular sweep in a square hall beats a stretched one squeezed into a space that doesn't want it. Proportion matters more than geometry.
Regulations treat both identically, incidentally. Approved Document K in England and Wales caps riser height at 220mm, sets minimum going at 220mm and limits pitch to 42 degrees for private flights, with Ireland's Technical Guidance Document K setting out equivalent provisions. Tapered steps are measured at the centre of the tread on flights under a metre wide, or at 270mm in from each side on wider ones.
One technical footnote that matters for specification. BS 5395-2, the code of practice covering helical and spiral geometry, applies to flights circular on plan. An ellipse sits outside that scope, so the design works from first principles alongside national guidance. Not a problem for a workshop that does this regularly. Very much a problem for one that doesn't.

Does an elongated sweep take up more floor space than a circular one?
Not necessarily more, though it distributes differently. Circular designs need a roughly square footprint because the sweep is uniform in every direction, while stretched plan forms extend along one axis and stay tighter across the other. In a long, narrow hallway the elongated option frequently occupies less usable area. In a square room the reverse applies. Measure your available opening along both axes before assuming either geometry suits the space.
Can a concrete staircase be built to an elliptical plan?
Yes, and concrete handles the geometry well, since the structural core is formed rather than assembled from repeating components. Formwork becomes the demanding element, as it must follow the changing curve accurately. Cladding is then templated to the finished core, which is why the survey stage matters so much on concrete projects. Expect a longer programme than a timber equivalent, and expect the geometry to be fixed considerably earlier in the build sequence.
Which geometry works better in a modern home with a glass balustrade?
Both suit contemporary interiors, though the practicalities differ. Constant-radius flights allow repeating curved glass panels, which reduces cost and simplifies replacement should one ever break. Continuously changing plan forms need individually shaped panels, each unique to its position. If minimal, uninterrupted glazing is the priority and budget is a real constraint, the circular option usually delivers a cleaner result for less. Discuss panel sizes early, since they influence the balustrade fixing detail.
